Betty and Ivory Hiking

The start of a long hike at Taylor Road Provincial Park

I have a simple solution to boost tourism in our province and it involves one person.

You

What would happen if every one of us planned a one day trip somewhere in our province this summer? What if we packed up the car and went to some town, village or wilderness area that we’ve never been before? The impact on the economy would be quite staggering.

Yesterday morning, upon returning from my daily 10K walk, I was asked ( told ! ) by my wife  if I would like to go with her and our granddaughter to Taylor Road Provincial Park near Spry Bay on the Eastern Shore. It was a magnificent day and if you haven’t been there and you want a challenging hike with stunning scenery, I would highly recommend that you go. We stopped in at one of our favorite restaurants at Liscombe Lodge and had dinner. ( Their coconut cream pie is till on my top 3 list! ).

Or, alternatively, you could stay put and be a tourist in your home town…like this week in Antigonish. It’s Highland Games week and there is a dizzying array of activities. What is your favorite? Opening and closing church services? Bike race, ceilidhs, Kilted golf tournament, salmon suppers, Antigonish Art Fair, Festival Antigonish plays, sidewalk sale on Main, piping and drumming competitions, Highland dancing, the Scottish Heavy Events, the  5 mile road race, the parade, the 1 mile road race, the beer tent, the beer tent ( that wasn’t a typo! ), high school reunions, massed pipe bands, Piper’s Glen, Gathering of the Arts, clan dinners, Concert Under The Stars, Piper’s Knockout Freestyle Ceilidh ( not sure what this it but the name is intriguing! ).

The Highland Games parade just won’t be the same without our dear friend Benny Druhan driving one of his beloved VW’s, with William in the passenger seat wielding his lasso.

So come on. Get off your duff and get moving.

You’ll have fun and you’ll give the economy a shot in the arm.

Have a great week.

P.S. Someone needs to report back after the “Knockout Ceilidh.” !
