No. I haven’t resumed playing golf again.

This picture was taken about 5 minutes before me and my brother got hopelessly lost in the woods at Thetis Lake Park outside of Victoria. Part of the hiking trail abutted the beautiful golf course pictured above.  It was supposed to be a routine hike through the forest except we decided to take “the road less travelled.” My brother had hiked this trail once before. I’ll save you all the embarrassing details but we ended up exiting the woods at the entrance to a different park. We ended up having to call his wife to come and get us so that we could make our way back to where our vehicle was parked.

One of the joys of travelling outside the country is anonymity. There’s something quite liberating being somewhere where no one knows who you are. I have a story coming up for you tomorrow about a friend who was travelling in Australia. She decided to take a bus tour and when the driver/tour guide asked all of the passengers their names, country of origin and occupation, her response was quite hilarious.

Yesterday on CBC radio’s “Atlantic Voice”, there was a half hour program about Antigonish and the community’s efforts to welcome Syrian refugees . It’s called “The Power of Community.” http://www.cbc.ca/atlanticvoice/2016/05/15/the-power-of-community/  It was very well done and would make any one of us proud. I am pleased to report that the group I’m working with at St. Ninian’s Parish is getting very close to welcoming Tareq Hadhad’s sister and two small children to our community.

Thanks for all of the responses to last week’s Faces in the Crowd story about Willemina Hendriske MacDonald. Her story was compelling and evoked many comments. In case you missed it, here was one of my favorites:

“One more time we hear from a person from Holland how grateful she is for what our Canadian soldiers did for her and her family during the war. Willimena went one step further.  She married one, came to Canada and in her own inimitable way gave back what she could to her adopted country. It would seem to me that she and her fellow Hollanders increased the prosperity of Canada, especially Antigonish County, and indeed  paid back part of the debt they owe to our soldiers.“

I couldn`t agree more.

Have a great week.
