” Those were the days my friend”
So. Who are the mystery golfers and what year was this picture taken? ( The first one to identify all 5 correctly gets a Week45 baseball cap ).
Unless you’re an older “born and bred” Antigonisher who lived here in the 60’s, you won’t have much luck answering this question. But that’s not the point.
Most of the people who read this column regularly, have a fleck or two of gray in their hair or, are like me, and don’t have to go for a perm very often. Anytime we see an old photo like the one above, we become a bit wistful thinking about our youth and wondering where the years have gone.
For better or for worse, I spent a lot of time at the golf course in my youth. I worked in the pro shop, along with one of the other guys in this photo, for the late John Graham. I also played hundreds of rounds of golf and also participated in many junior golf tournaments. This picture was taken on one of our legendary golf trips where we would all pile in the car, drive for hours, play 18 holes and arrive back home late at night. And before calling it a day, we would have a putting contest on the small practice putting green adjacent to the clubhouse… in the dark!
I was one of the lucky ones. My teenage years were filled with many great memories. I actually enjoyed school, played in all kinds of sports and had lots of friends.
And speaking of friends, I bumped into a former high school classmate the other day. We chatted briefly on Main Street. When we parted, I silently lamented the fact that I haven’t spent much time with this person and his wife over the years. We were all so busy raising children and trying to keep food on the table that life just zoomed past us. One of the great things about retirement is that now I have time to reconnect with old friends.
The streak is over. A mere hiccup, I hope. After almost 7 months of not consuming any television, I watched most of the Conservative leadership vote on Saturday evening. I am a hopeless political junkie and couldn’t resist the temptation. It turned out to be quite fascinating. We’ve seen this happen in sports where one team leads in the game right up until the final minute and then has victory snatched from under their noses. Dairy farmers across the country can heave a sigh of relief. If you weren’t following the leadership race, that last sentence won’t mean a thing to you.
Of course, I will be glued to the tube on Tuesday evening watching the results of the provincial election. Make sure you get out to vote. At least, this will give you the privilege of grumbling once the new government is sworn in.
I have replaced television watching with reading. I am on my 13th book of 2017. Any Rohinton Mistry fans out there? Maybe one of these days, I’ll join a book club.
Thanks for all of the comments about my Indian visa story posted on the weekend. If you missed it just go to the search bar and type in the words “ Delhi Dilemma”. Or just go to the bottom of this page and find it there. It’s a long read.
For those of you unable to make it to my presentation at the library, I will be doing another on Thursday, June 8th at 7:00 p.m. at People’s Place.
Have a great week… and get out and vote!
